On 22nd December2010,we conducted a handicraft competion for guides.It was held during the first two periods in the Basket ball court.43 guides participated in it.Our tiny tots presented their level best.Karishma of class IX.A bagged the first prize.All items presented were appreciatable.They were enthustiactic during the tenure.

The Vidyalaya has Scouts, Guides,  Cubs and Bulbuls wings. Trained Teachers give training to the students. Scouting and guiding helps in the four-fold development of good character, sound health habits, training in handicrafts and acquiring skills.

B-P's LAST MESSAGE

B-P prepared a farewell message to his Scouts, for publication after his death.
The message follows...

"Dear Scouts - If you have ever seen the play "Peter Pan" you will remember how the pirate chief was always making his dying speech because he was afraid that possibly when the time came for him to die he might not have time to get it off his chest. It is much the same with me, and so, although I am not at this moment dying, I shall be doing so one of these days and I want to send you a parting word of good-bye.
Remember, it is the last time you will ever hear from me, so think it over.
I have had a most happy life and I want each one of you to have as happy a life too.
I believe that God put us in this jolly world to be happy and enjoy life. Happiness doesn't come from being rich, nor merely from being successful in your career, nor by self-indulgence. One step towards happiness is to make yourself healthy and strong while you are a boy, so that you can be useful and so you can enjoy life when you are a man.
Nature study will show you how full of beautiful and wonderful things God has made the world for you to enjoy. Be contented with what you have got and make the best of it. Look on the bright side of things instead of the gloomy one.
But the real way to get happiness is by giving out happiness to other people. Try and leave this world a little better than you found it and when your turn comes to die, you can die happy in feeling that at any rate you have not wasted your time but have done your best. "Be Prepared" in this way, to live happy and to die happy- stick to your Scout Promise always when you have ceased to be a boy - and God help you to do it.

The message is undated but probably was written before 1929 because it was signed "Robert Baden-Powell" instead of "Baden-Powell of Gilwell". Lady Baden-Powell said that this letter, in an envelope addressed "to the Boy Scouts," along with other papers was always carried with them on their travels in an envelope marked "In the event of my death".

GUIDE FLAG

A GUIDE SHOULD KNOW

• The Guide Promise - Girls become Guides by making their Promise. Each country has its own Promise but all have the same 3 parts: duty to God or to your religion; duty to your country; keeping the Guide Law.
• The Good Turn - each Guide tries to do a kind thing for someone else, without payment and without being asked, every day.
• The World Badge - this can be worn on uniform or ordinary clothes. The three leaves of the trefoil stand for the threefold Promise. The vein in the centre is a compass needle, pointing the way and the two stars stand for the Promise and the Law. The colours stand for the golden sun shining over all the children of the world, from a blue sky. This badge is a guiding symbol that can be recognized all over the world.
• The World Flag - this is in the same colours as the World Badge and can be carried or flown by any member of the movement. It is often used as the Unit Flag. The three yellow blocks represent the threefold Promise and the white corner represents the commitment to peace of all WAGGGs' members.
• The Guide Sign - the three fingers stand for the three parts of the Promise. The Guide sign is used when making or renewing the Promise and can be used when meeting other Guides. It may also be used when receiving a badge or at the end of meetings.
• The Motto - Be Prepared - This means that Guides are ready to cope with anything that might come their way.
• The left handshake - this is the way members of the Movement greet each other. The left hand is the one nearest the heart and so shows friendship. Also, warriors held their weapons in their left hands, so by putting down your weapon, it meant that you were not going to hurt someone.
• Thinking Day - on the 22 February each year Guides think of their Guide sisters all around the world. The date was chosen at a World Conference because it was the birthday of both the Founder and the World Chief Guide.
• The World Centres - there are 4 Guide homes in different parts of the world: Our Chalet in Switzerland; Pax Lodge in London; Our Cabana in Mexico; and Sangam in India.
• The World Chief Guide - Olave, Lady Baden-Powell is the only person ever to have been World Chief Guide. She was the wife of the Founder, Lord Baden-Powell of Gilwell and lived from 1889 to 1977. 

ROBERT BADEN POWELL

Robert Baden-Powell was a famous soldier who fought in the Boer War in South Africa at the beginning of the 20th century. During the Siege of Mafeking, when the town and British soldiers were besieged by Boer soldiers, B-P noticed how the young boys made themselves useful by carrying messages for the soldiers. When he came home, he decided to put some of his Scouting ideas into practice to see if they would be any good for young boys and took 21 boys camping on Brownsea Island, near Poole in Dorset. The camp was a success, and B-P wrote his book Scouting for Boys, covering tracking, signaling, cooking etc. Soon boys began to organize themselves into Patrols and Troops and called themselves "Boy Scouts". Girls bought the book as well and formed themselves into Patrols of Girl Scouts.

                                         Before joining the army, becoming a hero and creating Scouting, Robert Stephenson Baden-Powell was just a good-humoured and friendly young man, who liked acting, games and life in the outdoors more than his studies. Resigned to his mischievous temperament, but recognising his talent on stage, a teacher called him an "admirable madman".

            After trying to get into Oxford, he was accepted at military academy, scoring 5th place among 718 applicants. In 1876, at the age of 19, a dreamer, curious and communicative, Second Lieutenant Baden-Powell set off en route to India...


         He felt fulfilled when he wrote of his adventures and his dreams: from his exploits with his brothers to the development of the Scout Method, without forgetting his tales of hunting, his military experiences, his adventures as an improvised secret agent, or his vision of the army. 
An able exponent of caricature and watercolour painting, B-P illustrated his own          articles and books. B-P played football, and enjoyed swimming, rowing, polo, boar hunting and ... like a good Englishman, cricket! But, above all, his passion was for outdoor activities.                                                                                  

guide movement

Guide, Girl Guide or Girl Scout is a member of a section of some Guiding organisations who is between the ages of 10 and 14. Age limits are different in each organisation. It is the female-centred equivalent of the (Boy) scout . The term Girl Scout is used in the United States and several East Asian countries. The two terms are used synonymously within this article.
Girl Guides are organised into units/troops averaging 20-30 girls under guidance of a team of leaders. Units subdivide into patrols of about six Guides and engage in outdoor and special interest activities. Units may affiliate with national and international organisations. Some units, especially in Europe, have been co-educational since the 1970s, allowing boys and girls to work together as Scouts. There are other programme sections for older and younger girls.

scout and guide- one day camp

 REPORT

               On 14/8/2010 Saturday we conducted a one day Scout and Guide camp in the school itself. 27 Guides and 50 Scouts participated .In the Guides section there were 4 patrols and in Scouts 7 patrols. The camp began at 7.00 a.m in the morning and we packed off at 5.15 p.m in the evening.

       The students assembled in the school at 7.00a.m. Then patrol division and preparation for flag hoisting took place. The flag hoisting ceremony commenced at 8.30a.m. In the flag hoisting ceremony Mr.Kumariah (HWB Scout) addressed Scouts and Guides. After the flag hoisting ceremony BP Six exercise was demonstrated by the patrol leaders. Then the session started with Mr.Deepak Kumar (S.M) class. He took an interesting class on “History of Scout and Guide movement and Advancement of Scout and Guide movement”. Between the session our honorable principal Mr.Ajay Babu came and gave his valuable advises and suggestions. Then by 10.45 a.m we had our tea break for 15 minutes. After the tea break was the exciting sing song session. Chief guest Mr.Kumariah, Mr.Deepak Kumar, Miss.Nisha (G.C) and one of the Rajya Puraskar student Akhil.G.Nair everyone from the Scouts to the Teachers participated. This was one of the mostinteresting session of the day. Then by 11.45 a.m Mrs.Swarnamma’s (TGT S.Sc) class on compass and mapping was worth listening. Madam gave very interesting and valuable information about compass and mapping. Miss.Nisha’s (G.C) class on Morse and Semaphores signaling with flag ended up the morning session. 01.15 p.m - 02.00 p.m was the time for lunch break. After lunch, Mr.Kumariah took an interesting class on knotting and lashing. In this session students learnt different kinds of knotting and lashing like Reef knot, Sheet bend, Clove hitch etc. The camp was a buzz of activity then. After this we had a short tea break of 15 minutes. Then came the game session. Under the leadership of Mr.Deepak Kumar, the Scouts and Guides combined games were held. After that students assembled in the ground and cleaned the area before lowering the flag.
         By 04.45 p.m the flag lowering ceremony was conducted. From the Group Leader Akhil.G.Nair, G.C took the flag and by 05.15 p.m the camp was dismissed.

Why one would want to be a scout?

No one can deny that youth in this country and indeed in the whole wolrd is in a state of great turmoil today.it is not prepared to tolerate any longer the infinaty of life in affluent societies and the injustice and exploitation which exist in such large measure in the poorest parts of the world. It refuses to be imposed by an older genration in whose empty promoises it has lost all faith .It has seen too much selfishness masquerading as patriotisim ,it has seen to many advertisement passing as social service , too much violence covered up in in ostensible pursuits of peace to have any regard left for those who have the reins of powerof power in their hands.
         The indescipline among the indian youth today is a result of accumalated frustrations;a cheerful ,active and outward looking scout is free from frustrations,not because life is kinder to a scout than to others ,but because he has an outlook in which both sorrow and joy ,failure and and achievement have their appropriate place and get synthesized in a deeper understanding of human existence .Life in the camps by which the movement sets so much store is a whole school of education in itself. It teaces emotional intergration and the solidarity of india as nothing else can. it satisfies a large number of youthful impulses and desires , and as an open air , outdoor activity promotes clean habits and a healthy outlook among the participents.
         And the beauty of it all is that the scout teachings are not imparted through a para- millitary organisation or through an iron regiment but through activities in which pleasure and instructions are inexplicably blended.
